Cancer : From the rare disease to the most common disease

As a part of Cancer Day, In Manorama Online, IMA Kottayam President Dr Bipin P. Mathew (Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon) and Dr Unni S. Pillai (Consultant Medical Oncologist) raised public awareness about the timely treatment of cancer.

This article mentions that according to the Kerala Association of surgical Oncology, sixty thousand new cancer cases are reported in Kerala every year. By 2030, this could rise to sixty-six thousand, so it is essential to educate people to recognise the symptoms and prevent cancer.

In the past, cancer was sporadic in some people, but today, it is possible for one person in a family to be cancerous. Early detection can cure the disease, and ignorance of the treatments worsens the condition.

The article also mentions that Lung Cancer, Head & Neck Cancer, Prostate cancer are the most common in men, whereas Breast cancer and thyroid cancer are more common in women.

The motto of this year’s Cancer Day celebration is ‘Close the Care Gap’.
